A Time to Give: Giving Back to the Sport

In this season of Thanksgiving, we truly do have a lot to be thankful for, including the fact that we can move and sustain ourselves for the length of time that it takes to accomplish three seperate sports! It's a great time to give back to the sport, too. There are countless ways to do that, and here are three suggestions for places to start:

1: Volunteer at a triathlon clinic or with a foundation. Last weekend, I had the amazing opportunity to volunteer for the Semper Fi clinic, which gave me the benefit of observing and learning from our head coaches, as well as meeting and supporting about 20 members of Team Semper Fi.  It was an excellent chance for me to support and cheer for them in all three sports. There are teams and groups for children, teenagers, veterans, and beginners that could all use an experienced hand!

2: Volunteer at a races. Races happen year round now, and none of these races could happen without the help of countless volunteers. Every race from your local Turkey Trot right on up to the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, need people to volunteer. There are so many jobs from course marshall to swim support to aid stations. Even if you are participting in the race, you can still volunteer to stuff packets or work at packet pick up. Volunteering at a race is the perfect way to give back and experience the race from the other side.

3: Volunteer for your local tri club. Volunteering for your local tri club can be a great way to give back. These opportunities can be more flexible too. Perhaps the club needs help staffing a booth at an event, or maybe they need help with their website or a mailout.

Finding opportunities to volunteer is easy!  Most races will have a specifically designated page just for those wanting to help.  Simply googling “volunteer for triathlon” got me so many results that I was overwhelmed!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving and see what volunteer opportunities are near you!
