Do You Have A Wellness Team?

At Multisport Performance Institute (MPI), we spend a great deal of time with our TeamMPI Athletes talking about triathlon and what pieces of a pie affect our overall performance.   We’ve developed the following diagram to help conceptualize what we teach:

                   
For this article, I thought we’d discuss the “Wellness” piece.  Often times when we interview an athlete (and they interview us!) prior to coaching them, we get a response of, “Huh?” to the question, “And what do you do for your Wellness?”.  This is typical in the triathlon world filled with online training plans, racing strategy and nutritional tips – but little information on Wellness. 

We want athletes who spend 25-100+ hours a month training to spend just a few on developing their Wellness program.  What is that?  Simply surrounding yourself with professionals who you see regularly that keep you healthy and injury free.  These may be Chiropractors, Sports Massage Therapists, Yoga Instructors or Wellness Doctors to name a few.  Sometimes these professionals wear dual hats and provide a multitude of services under one roof. 

These are the folks who learn about you as an athlete and help keep you injury free while guiding you on everything from proper dynamic stretching to effective supplements like MAP.  They are most often the folks we recommend athletes see first when a nagging injury begins or has existed for some time.   At MPI, we utilize the concept of “team” in everything we do and want athletes to start to think of forming their “Wellness Team”.   So find professionals who are athletes themselves and can understand your lifestyle.  Get recommendations or just go for an informational visit and start forming your “Team”. 

For myself and fellow MPI coach John Murray, we rely on a team of local professionals for our individual needs and, of course, the guidance and wisdom of Dr. Minkoff at Bodyhealth.com.  It is an essential part of our triathlon performance!
