Fun and Benefits of Duathlon

Duathlons are simply simpler than triathlon, and a great way to start the season! Unlike triathlon in which the swim provides a barrier to entry for some, duathlon removes that barrier, and eliminates the equipment needed for it too. It provides a race without the stress of the swim while providing just as (and in some cases more of) an exciting of a race environment.

Removing the swim gives many the confidence to dip their toes into the multisport lifestyle for the first time. For the more experienced, these typically shorter races provide a great hard speed session, a competitive brick workout with friends, and live action transition practices for those with upcoming goal races. That type of experience is incredibly difficult to replicate on your own. Three of my first four multisport races were duathlons, and really allowed me to get a tremendous amount of experience each time in both transition and pacing that helped me learn how race and pace multisport events.

Another exciting thing about Duathlon is how they completely shake up the leaderboards! In triathlon, you can rarely win/place/show in the swim, but you can definitely prevent that! Duathlons give those weaker swimmers who are strong bike/runners a chance to be much more competitive. In racing a duathlon, it is important to have a strategy and stick to it. Unlike triathlon when you put your head in the water and are on your own, duathlons have mass starts similar to road races. This pack mentality often leads to incredibly fast starts, pr'ing your one mile or 5k (which I've done and paid for) at the start of a du can lead to a regrettable bike and make the second run a not so fun experience!

Give the Du a try. Team MPI will kick off our Portofino Tri series with a duathlon on April 9. Race it alone, or with a friend or two as a relay, and let us know how much fun you have.
