It's Not Too Soon to Get Ready for the New Year!

It's only 24 days until the New Year.

Almost everyone has made New Year's resolutions in the past. Often they are somewhat symbolic, and although we wish for the outcome, they are done with little forethought and without a realistic approach.  We view resolutions as a burden and a difficult concrete decision to abstain from something. This year, I challenge you to list your training and racing resolutions, and give yourself the gifts necessary to stick to them. No matter your goals/resolutions, these three gifts can help you achieve them.

1) Schedule
Day by day, week by week, month by month. Do not resolve to overlay your training and racing into your existing schedule without a realistic look at what you have going on. With a little planning, you can avoid the stress of having your "A" race fall a week after your family vacation.

2) Adequate Recovery
We get stronger through absorption of training during recovery. If you don't allow yourself to recover you are cheating yourself.  It is ok to embrace extra sleep and skip a session when your body suggests it. Don't then try to make it up!!!

3) Maintaining Motivation
For some, taking a short break from the rigors of a structured training schedule is enough. Others are motivated by reflection and examination that allows for new aspirations.  A new toy is also a way to quickly bring back some excitement!

New Year's is a great time to hit the reset button for bad habits, however big or small. Research shows that 80% of us abandon our resolutions within 6 weeks of starting. I challenge you to continually give yourself these gifts and others needed to keep to those resolutions!
