Utilize the USA Triathlon Athlete Resources

Posted by Coach Ben Dillon

This time of year is very exciting for the multi-sport athlete as the training completed in the off-season will finally be put to good use! Hours spent refining those swim mechanics, dialing in that optimal bike fit position, and pounding the pavement will surely pay huge dividends as the race season heats up!

If you are looking for information on rules, race calendars, or articles, consider consulting with the resources offered by USA Triathlon, the national governing body of triathlon for the United States at www.usatriathlon.org. They are far more than an organization that collects yearly dues!

USAT has done a fantastic job over the years in making their site easier to navigate to get the things that Athletes need. Click “USAT for Me” then “Athlete Resources”. Along the left hand side you will find multiple topics that cover a wide variety of issues that we as multi-sport athletes need to know.

Knowing the rules should be a top priority when entering a USAT Sanctioned multi-sport event.  Even seasoned athletes should brush up on the rules and be aware of any new changes. Safety is the first priority of the Event production staff, followed by enforcement of the USAT Competitive rules by a USAT Certified Official. These rules are to maintain consistency and order from race to race across the country, keeping competition safe and fair.

Also among “Athlete Resources” you will find information on Anti-doping. Yes, this is a real problem not just for the pros, but for the age-groupers as well.

For those new to the sport, you’ll find a beginner’s guide that is a perfect starting point for all new athletes to the sport of triathlon and is even a good reference for an experienced athlete.

If you are interested in getting your kid(s) involved in the sport, there is a “Youth” and “Kids Zone” section on how to introduce them and make it more about fun and not competition.

USAT sanctions over 4,300 events a year and their calendar promotes these events in an easy to use Search engine; breaking it down by event name, date, state, and zip code.

Maximize your enjoyment of multi-sport by utilizing the resources that USA Triathlon provides you and me. Look for the “USAT Sanctioned Event” at all your multi-sport events. You can bet that if an event is USAT sanctioned and the Race Director is a USAT Certified Race Director, you’re getting a top-notch, high quality produced event.
