This weekend I helped out with CAF's Dodge Paratriathlon Camp that was put on by the Challenged Athlete's Foundation (CAF) and hosted by our TeamMPI coaches Peter Harsch, John Murray and Mark Sortino at the Portofino Resort Island Resort on Pensacola Beach. I'd been looking forward to this camp ever since helping out with the same camp last year because it's an experience like none other. I spent the weekend surrounded by some amazingly inspiring people.

Wellness Doc

After seeing my Wellness Doctor today, I am reminded at what a critical part of my overall athletic (and consequently, life) team he has become. From those who love staying active every day and compete recreationally to those who train seven days a weeks competing competitively, we all share a love of exercise....

Wow, I can’t believe winter is coming to end and springtime is here. I love this time of year as the weather starts to warm up and the days start to get longer, you just can’t help but want to be outside training. I can’t believe how quickly springtime has come; it feels like we were just finishing up with the fall races and now it’s already time to start gearing up for the early season races.

For many athletes, now is the time of year that we’ve started back triathlon focused training. For the last couple of months, you may have reduced your training, gone through targeted training blocks (focusing primarily on running, cycling or swimming) or have completely taken time off from triathlon to participate in other fun activities. Great! So what happens when you start back up?

So the New Year has come, and you have lots of goals drawn out – good! If you or any friends or family have listed “getting back to being active”, then we’ve got some helpful suggestions...

I listened to a great interview this year with Mark Allen’s coach, Luis Vargas, and his philosophy on “waves”. The idea, while not novel or complex, is incredibly simple to understand and makes complete sense to us at TeamMPI. Luis talks about how everything is made up of waves – light, sound, etc. - and we can apply that to training and racing both physically and mentally....

What Triathlon Means

As the season comes to a close for many triathletes (both TeamMPI Athletes and friends), it’s a great time for me to reflect on an amazing year for all of them. Many conquered fears they thought not possible. Many pushed themselves harder than they ever have - physically AND mentally...

I’ve been fortunate to train with some very focused triathletes. They show up to the swim, bike or run ready to accomplish that session’s goals. When it gets tuff, they stick with it. When the session calls for going easy, they go easy. Truly, I have seen dozens of these athletes. But when it comes time to race, not all of them perform...why?

It’s hard to imagine that triathlon is only approaching 40 years old. I just read that USAT annual membership was over 140,000 in 2010. Additionally, there were over 326,000 single-day members. These numbers are a result of over 2.3 million unique individuals participating in triathlon in 2010 – over a 55% increase from the previous year (according to a recent report from the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA)). I’m not surprised – it’s a GREAT lifestyle!

How Do You Know?

Do you know when you start those training sessions where you feel – shall we say – not so good? You know that feeling when you start swimming and the water feels like molasses? Or how about starting the bike and feeling EVERY single pedal stoke – as if your brakes are rubbing! And certainly everyone has felt those painful, heavy cinderblocks we call legs pounding the pavement with each step – before we’ve even gone 1/8 of a mile? So how can we mentally continue with a positive attitude?
