Coach Mark Turner joined the staff of Team MPI in 2015 and has been coaching endurance sports since 2010. Prior to coaching endurance sports he coached boys lacrosse in Texas and Louisiana. An avid learner and dedicated coach, Coach Mark”T” has continued to extend his knowledge base by acquiring endurance sport focused certifications in the following: IRONMAN University Certified Coach, USAT Level 2 Endurance and Paratriathlon, USMS Level II, and VFS Bike Fitter.

As an active advocate for the sport of triathlon, Mark was selected in 2018 to be one of the Time to Tri Ambassadors and in 2019 was recognized by the USA Triathlon as the Official of the Year. He and his wife Lee are also IRONMAN Rules Officials and Head Referees, as well as USAT Cat 2 and USAT Elite Rules Officials. He currently serves the sport as the USAT Upper and Lower Midwest South Regional Officials Coordinator, the USAT Rules Education Coordinator and in 2020 was asked to serve as the USAT National Officials Coordinator. As well as his deep involvement with USA Triathlon as both a coach and an official, he is also deeply involved as a coach and official with IRONMAN. On the coaching front, in 2018 he helped establish the IRONMAN Certified Coach Event Teams program that focus on helping First Time IRONMAN athletes. He remains a part of the IMU CC event teams and was asked to serve as an IMU CC Regional Head Coach for 2020.


A veteran of the USMC, MarkT has a passion for serving the veteran and paratriathlete community. He is a teacher/coach who interacts and builds relationships with the athletes he works for and strongly believes that listening and responding to what the athlete needs and wants is the foundation of the athlete/coach relationship. MarkT brings a variety of past experiences in other sports. He played high school lacrosse in Maryland prior to joining the Marine Corps. He has also served as an official and committeeman in the sport of golf. He was the Director of Competitions and Communications for the South Texas Amateur Golf Association as well as a rules official in that sport.


A lifelong learner, MarkT is in constant pursuit of education and opportunities to apply that learning. After being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps he married his wife of 32 years, Lee. He attended the University of Houston where he earned his B.S. in Political Science. He also holds a Master of Divinity degree. In the realm of sports he has advanced his knowledge base with IMU CC Swim Video Analysis certification. 


Following a misdiagnosis while in his late 20’s Mark struggled with weight gain into his late 40’s. When he finally received the correct diagnosis he began his journey back to fitness and has completed 7 IRONMAN distance races and  numerous 70.3s and shorter triathlons. 


Apart from his work in the sport he loves reading and cooking.
