One of my favorite things to include in High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is the Tabata interval. The short bursts of VERY high intensity with brief recoveries built into an overall workout can yield quality results in moving the athlete’s neural system needle in a positive direction.
Tabata intervals, when incorporated safely, can really help the nervous system develop resistance to fatigue.

Many athletes are under the impression that coaches are more helpful during the race or competition season. We hate to burst your bubble, but that’s simply not true! While there are many benefits to working with a coach year-round, the off-season is the best time to lay a strong fitness foundation, shore up weaknesses, troubleshoot specific issues, and other things.
In no particular order, here are five main reasons endurance athletes should work with a coach, particularly in the off-season.

Coach Laura's Coach Tip Tuesday
This week on Coach Tip Tuesday:
This week, Coach Laura shares her thoughts about why athletes should work with a coach in the off-season (even in 2020 when it feels like a perpetual off-season). There are so many valuable benefits to working with a coach year-round, but especially in the winter months.

Team MPI Athlete Anniversary Spotlight
Lauren Fassler is celebrating her first Team MPI anniversary!
As I celebrate my first anniversary training with Team MPI and Coach Kelly Ryan, I look back on an unusual year. It’s split almost equally between the “Befores” and the COVID-19 pandemic.
During this year, my triathlete IQ increased as I learned the importance of workouts with a purpose, periodization, injury prevention, and training partners (in addition to my coach, of course).
Before COVID, I experienced the joy of podiuming 3 times in my new age group (2 road races and an Olympic triathlon for F 45-49) and achieving a sub-8 average pace in a 5k road race.
Then, the whole world started closing down in March 2020: canceled races, closed gyms, and indefinitely suspended Master’s swim workouts. To stay engaged with triathlons and prevent burnout, I have worked with Coach Kelly to make sure that I still have goals, events, and group workouts in 2020.
During the pandemic, I ran my first half-marathon and participated in several other virtual races. I’ve been enjoying virtual group workouts in my home gym (a.k.a., my living room & bedroom), such as my coach-led Zwift/ROTB sessions and my gym’s cardio HIIT and strength classes.
I’m still learning new exercises (including those with my new TRX) and trying out new structured workouts. I’m also challenging my mind by participating in endurance sports book clubs. So far, we’ve met virtually to discuss Alex Hutchinson’s Endure, Mike Reilly’s Finding My Voice, Chris McDougall’s Born to Run, and Scott Jurek’s North. Most importantly, I've recommitted myself to an athletic lifestyle, which is healthy, fun, and fights the dreaded Quarantine 15.
Happy anniversary, Lauren!
We're so glad you're part of the Team MPI family! Lauren trains with Coach Kelly Ryan.
