Team MPI Newsletter

You don't need an organized Turkey Trot to enjoy the growing tradition of a Thanksgiving Day workout! Coach Maria tells the story of her workouts that date back to childhood.

Mental Framing

Coach Adam pulls from the world of philosophy to provide a framework for more positive self-talk. It can be used to bring more meaning and focus to a whole session or race as well as to a single moment.

Team MPI Coaches Retreat - West Coast

Team MPI held its 4th Coaches Retreat but first in Tempe Arizona the Friday before Sunday's IRONMAN® Arizona race. It was a huge success with 14 Coaches from around the country along with 8 Team MPI Coaches presenting 7 briefs throughout the day. Coaches earned coveted CEUs (Continuing Education Units) from both USA Triathlon and USA Cycling.

We're doing our next one in Tampa, FL on January 11th and can't wait. These retreats are at the core of our coaching philosophy as coaches: collaborate, learn and teach. We truly love meeting other coaches and feel the communication and openness we have makes us all better coaches!

It was a fantastic day!

Athlete Spotlight

Meet Joe Wojcik

training with Coach Mark Sortino

Welcome to a new member of TeamMPI – Joe Wojcik. Joe is based in Southern California and is signed up for IM South Africa in late March 2020. This will be Joe’s sixth Ironman and it just so happens to be the last in his quest to complete an IM on every continent (and if Antarctica announces one, he will be there!). He has raced in Jeju (South Korea/Asia), Florianopolis (Brazil/South America), Cozumel (Mexico, North America), Regensburg (Germany/Europe) and Cairns (Australia/Australia). Joe is an lifelong athlete and played college lacrosse while finding the sport of triathlon in his early 30s. He has also competed in the Haute Route Pyrenees bike race (2016) as well as six consecutive Boston Marathons (2009-2014) and a 100K trail race in Hong Kong.

Joe’s coach is Mark Sortino and Joe knew Mark’s wife Jen as a member of the Zenergy Master’s Swim Program when Joe relocated from Asia to Sun Valley, Idaho in 2007. Joe lived there for seven years before moving to Orange County, CA in 2014.

Joe has a freshman in college (Jack at U of O in Eugene, Oregon) and a junior in high school (Logan) and is married to Brooke (a former triathlete herself but not quite as passionate as Joe!)

Joe is currently working for a confetti company based in Los Angeles that provides special event effects for large productions like the Super Bowl, Broadway shows and major concert tours. Who knew?!

Meet Joyel Schaefer

training with Coach Laura Henry

I currently live about 5 miles north of Sherburne, NY (out in the middle of nowhere), which is 1/2 hr S of Utica, 1 hr SE of Syracuse, 1.5 hr NE of Binghamton.

My background is Aeronautical Engineering (RPI alum 1997 BS, 1999 MS) and I work as an Engineering Manager and Product Line Manager for Collins Aerospace at a division in Rome, NY.

Growing up I have loved and tried and competed in several sports such as softball, tennis, crew, karate, Crossfit, but I get bored and I think that’s why I love triathlon. It’s not just one thing.  I’ve been doing triathlon off and on since 2012, where I rode a hybrid bike in the Cooperstown Sprint Tri.  In 2014 I walked into a gym in Syracuse where they asked me what my goals were and I spit out, “I want to do an IRONMAN someday."  I don’t even ever recall really thinking those words before. I took this walking unconscious dream as my soul’s greatest desire and so I’m following it!

With the help I got fitter and signed up for IRONMAN 70.3 Syracuse.  I worked hard to get there and completed the swim and bike and got pulled off the run course due to a storm. Then I signed up for and got a DNF in Ironman Placid on July 24, 2016. It’s taken me really until now to bounce back from that failure. I trained almost 100% alone, had minimal tri friends or team or support. Now I have a nice group of tri friends and I’m happy to be a part of Team MPI. I have trust and a good feeling that is the right path!!   My short term goals are to drop weight and finish strong for IRONMAN 70.3 Mussleman on July 19, 2020. After that I would like to start training for a full.

I came to know about Team MPI from friend and Teammate, Mary Houck. She knew Coach Laura and suggested that I might be a good fit and I agree!

The biggest challenge I face is to stay optimistic. But I usually can do that because I DO believe that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.  I think about the athlete that is inside of me.  I have persevered in the past and have shown it many times before. I think Triathlon is PERFECT practice for this. I’ve been in the middle of workouts where I’m super grumpy and have worked hard to flip it around, accept what is, appreciate what I can do and just keep going.  I think this is key, not only for triathlon, but for life.

It’s really important to me to be healthy for my family, to lead by example and so I include my family in workouts and triathlon as much as possible. My kids have participated many of my activities, such as training together, racing together and we have biked across NY state together.

Thanks for the welcome and glad to be here!
