MUSINGS FROM A COACH - 11 FEBRUARY '25

Happy Valentine’s Day! Although we’re a few days early, I thought I’d capitalize on this theme for today’s musings.

Being a professional endurance sports coach is an incredible profession. Of course, there are both highs and lows, but the highs are simply exhilarating! The variability and individuality of each athlete and sport make it an incredibly exciting field.

Just look at this week’s races: a Fat Tire Bike Race under the full moon on snow, a bike Time Trial in the desert, a professional triathlon in the Middle East, and the Winter Triathlon and Duathlon Championships here in the USA. These events are simply mind-blowing!

Now, back to the Valentine’s theme. Coaching such a diverse range of athletes and sports has taught me over the years that athletes are incredibly adept at pushing their bodies to the limits, but they often struggle with taking proper care of themselves.

I’m not a medical professional, but I can confidently say that one of the most beneficial actions an athlete can take is to consult a sports massage therapist regularly. This could mean every other week or every other month, depending on the athlete’s needs. Finding a trusted professional who can learn about you, the athlete, and teach you about yourself and your body could be one of the most important things you can do for yourself.

Athletes frequently come to me with various physical aches, pains, discomforts, or “niggles.” Of course, I can’t diagnose them (remember, I’m not a doctor), but I often feel comfortable recommending seeing a sports massage therapist. And what about when there’s no discomfort? That’s when I also suggest seeking the services of a professional bodyworks person—it’s called maintenance.

If you’re currently not seeing anyone, consider giving it a try. Ask around, do some research, and bravely step out of your comfort zone. If you recognize the value of seeing a sports massage therapist but haven’t been consistent in doing so, why not re-commit to taking care of your body?

So, this Valentine’s Day, make time to show love and appreciation to yourself. We know we’re capable of achieving great things, so let’s prioritize taking care of our bodies.

Gratefully,

MarkCEO Team MPI
