MUSINGS FROM A COACH - 27 NOVEMBER '25
I'd like to be a bit selfish for this week's musings and have pushed its launch until today, Thanksgiving Day. The older I get, the more thankful I become - or, that's what I tell myself! I therefore want to say "thank you" to those who have positively affected my athletic life.
Thanks to my middle school soccer coach who constantly kept me late after practice was over working me in the goal. He taught me the value of going the extra mile...
Thanks to my high school soccer and swim coach, who demanded the absolute best from all of us each and every day. He taught me the value of Team.
Thanks to my college classmates that taught me how to work hard and play hard without ever losing our friendship.
Thanks to my first cycling group I joined in my thirties. Those four men taught me how to be competitive at a high level with your friends, complete against each and still have a blast.
Thank you to my former business partner, John, who taught me compassion and patience as a coach.
Thank you to the dozens of elite coaches from whom I've learned (and continue to learn) great coaching - they're the best in the world.
Thank you to all the wonderful athletes who have let me into their athletic lives and allowed me to cheer them on with some guidance and direction. Being a part of someone's journey is what life is all about.
Thank you to all my family who have supported my journey - both financially and emotionally. Thank you to IRONMAN and all the companies and corporations that put on incredible endurance events that allowed me to experience a year's worth of emotions in a single day. Thank you to those Race Directors.
And finally, a thank you to myself for continuing my effort of constantly trying to balance Drive and Gratitude. I think a path to greatness doesn't have to include being a jerk.
Gratefully,
Mark
