MUSINGS FROM A COACH - 9 DECEMBER '25
I dug up some old quotes I’ve stashed a while bak and thought I’d share them. I have some idea where some may have come from, but my lack of confidence prevents me from assigning credit. So a sincere “thank you” for those smart and witty people who gave us these gems...
"I am self aware and honest - not afraid to fail or to succeed.”
Love this one - something I strive to be myself and goals I set when working for athletes I coach. Being self-aware of our bodies and efforts is something I chat about all the time. But being “honestly self aware” of ourselves mentally is another task entirely. A validating step in this direction is our ability to not be afraid to fail or succeed.
"Character is more important than results"
I spend a lot of time with professional athletes talking about how they’d like to be remembered: as someone with “x” amount of wins or someone who was a great teammate and countryman?
"I trust myself more than anyone."
Love this one as well! There’s so many facets to this that I really can’t dive into it completely. I’ll let you apply and decipher this for yourself.
"Let everyone else worry...I'll just focus each and every day"
Anyone who’s set big goals or signed up for big events gets this quote. Often times it’s
the projected fear of friends, family and loved ones that come raining down on us while prepping for the big day(s). Stick with the process and “trust yourself”.
"Crossing the finish line having given everything in my body and soul defines perfect success."
Truly the case. There are so many things out of our control in endurance races that we just have to redefine what success actually looks like.
And finally,
“This day cannot be replicated”
Each and every day is a gift and over in a heartbeat. Why waste time looking backward or forward? “Be where your feet are”.
Gratefully,
Mark
