This time of year seems to always inspire athletes to create goals to better themselves and their lifestyles. Some people look to improve their family relationships, financial situations, career goals, etc. while others may look to regain or improve their fitness. Some athletes may have a new targeted event for the upcoming year and are motivated to set new goals and create plans to achieve them. This desire to get fit and strong can be powerful and motivate us to get started as soon as possible.
But when our start date arrives, we often find something that prevents us from starting – weather, work, time, etc. If we start on time, we may encounter obstacles that prevent us from being consistent and following through with our plans. The universe seems to make it super hard to get the ball rolling. So how can we prevent this?
I've found over time that one thing that seems to help athletes get started and stay consistent with their plans is getting a training partner. When we know there’s someone else waiting for us to show up and train, we're more likely to go train. When we feel lazy, the weather isn't perfect or we just don't seem to have that boost of motivation, a training partner is there waiting for us to show up. There's accountability, camaraderie and friendship that can oftentimes take the burden off ourselves from having to find the drive to put those run shoes on or grab that swim bag.
So when you start thinking about creating fitness goals and training plans, why not include a friend or two to team up with? It can be as infrequent as once a week or can be multiple sessions a week. If you're concerned about how your current fitness matches up with your friend, just be open and honest. You'd be surprised how other athletes put your companionship well above your fitness level. Together, you will push each other to stay the course and achieve your goals.
Think about it. :) Gratefully, Mark CEO Team MPI |
