“I love that being good at this doesn’t come easy. You have to work every day, as much time as you can. Work on the things that you need to improve but also the stuff that you really like, to get better at it. You need to know what you’re capable of so you’re not always so out of control.”
Who said that? A world champion? A successful Pro Athlete? One of the best at what they do in their sport?10 year-old mountain biker, Weston Lukens. Yup. 10 years old. Dang....
Let's break this down...
Quote #1:
"I love that being good at this doesn't come easy." I love this quote. In order to accomplish hard things, we've got to do hard things. When things don't come easy, it requires us to muster some tenacity, drive, determination and a Marc Mathews viewpoint of "...You've got to want it more than you fear it." When we ultimately begin to master it, the sense of joy from something earned is priceless...
Quote #2: "Work on the things that you need to improve but also the stuff that you really like, to get better at it." There's a little gem in here...this sh*t is supposed to be fun! So while we all know we need to work on areas we need to improve (duh), we can't stop doing the things we really like. When it's fun, we come back for more.
Quote #3:
"You need to know what you’re capable of so you’re not always so out of control.” We must continue to BE BOLD. Push ourselves (safely) with the idea that we must fail a lot in order to succeed forever. We must not fear failure. When we arrive with that attitude, then and only then, can we push our boundaries to learn what we're capable of.
So Wes, thank you for your decade of life wisdom! Rock On!
Check out the phenom and be inspired (and listen to him laugh non-stop)!
