Musings from a Coach...

The Joy of Playing

MUSINGS FROM A COACH - 10 JUNE '25

The above picture was taken many years ago (hence that young coach in the middle) a couple of days before Ironman Texas. Four of us had Swimskiins on (a light, non-buoyant one-piece worn over a triathlon kit allowed in non-wetsuit races) as we were getting ready for a practice swim.

A keen eye would see that one suit doesn't look like all the others - the zipper is in front. Why? Because the "seasoned" athlete put it on backwards! We told Rex of his error right as our friend was taking the pic, immortalizing the moment forever.

I was reminded of this wonderful moment this past weekend while attending a local triathlon that had seen seven Team MPI athletes racing and dozens and dozens of friends as well. Well over half the field were first-timers, including within the Team MPI group.

And as we were getting ready to race, nerves were clearly present, but so to were the laughs following comical mistakes. Yes, we had wetsuits on backwards, misplaced equipment, races to the restrooms and some wonderful fan posters. One such poster (below) made every nervous athlete laugh as they walked by on the way to the start of the race:

Of course, the air was thick with anxiousness, but it was also filled with excitement and joy. All these adults were about to embark on a “play” session. This is one of the many reasons why undertaking something challenging and difficult for the first time, or for the tenth time, can be so enriching: it’s fun!

Yes endurance sports can be demanding - requiring both physical and metal tenacity and strength. But in the end, they are merely playgrounds for us adults to play in.

When I see athletes laughing at their own mistakes before a race, I know immediately that they're in the right place - both physically and mentally. And to my own joy this past weekend, I saw athletes laughing over and over again.

Gratefully,

Mark
